To Till or Not to Till

We’ve reached it!
The historically predicted last freeze date in our area is typically Mother’s Day. However, you might have noticed, it’s been pretty dang cold the last couple of days.
It’s ok though, we’re still figuring out land preparation. The BIG takeaway is that as SOON AS IT’s past freeze date, we should start to plan direct-seeding. If you haven’t started your row-plan yet (or take part in collaborating on what we’re going to start growing in our hügel rows) please check in with Teal or Sophia! There will be print outs of the rows. Visit the post a couple of weeks ago for details.
Next step up…. could lead to a lot of soil blowing away!
Last week we had some grand plans in the works involving a flower area, and planting of Three Sisters. Please see last week’s post about the garden plan for the full space.
However, Saturday I (Mary K) went to actually try to till a garden (for the first time admittedly). See video above for edited version of what was happening… I sent a copy to the household to see if I was not using the machinery correctly. Generally speaking, it took a lot of effort to break the initial crust of hardened root-bound earth. When I did, the reward was billowing in small dusty clouds and flying off. So I stopped at that point (arms tired anyway) and returned the tiller (with no charge for that one!). The guys at Tates suggested the next model up… it’s burley.
Lawn mowed Saturday morning! 🥸Could be garden in disguise…
I’d like you to consider some alternatives to planting the Western part of the lot, closest to the parking lot. Let’s plan to discuss it more in tomorrow’s meet up.
Please bring gloves!
While we’re in shoveling/pitchforking mode… might be good to wear close-toed shoes (Ben)…🤓
Sign
Henry + One Stone Crew traced it last week! Release the paint! We’re about to declare the space.
Soon to come, let’s discuss ways we can engage community members in the garden.

One Stone has a seed station! Now… most seed packets declare direct-seed dates start now. I (personally) question the difference between direct seeding and starting seeds… another topic for discussion. Let’s do a review of what we have started!
